"mixmatch" for "mishmash"

A ‘mishmash’ is a confused, disorderly mixture of things and has been about for over 500 years. The possible eggcorn ‘mixmatch’ is trying to impose some kind of sense or order, as is the intermediate ‘mixmash’.

There is also the term mix-and-match to refer to the options available when selecting two items of clothing for color/pattern coordination. So, I think you’re correct in calling “mixmatch” an eggcorn conveying a more orderly assembly than a mishmash. Nice find.

Re: "mixmatch" for "mishmash"

Checking a possible eggcorn in the Eggcorn database I noticed some recent entries and thought I might at last have managed to break into the inner sanctuary, but was cruelly deceived. It does seem a little odd that the connection between this forum and the database seems so tenuous and given that we now have a number of regular forum contributors well qualified to determine eggcornicity perhaps Chris might consider using some of them to help begin to clear some of the growing backlog?

I hadn’t remembered your earlier post, Peter—sorry about that. And sorry, too, that you’ve entered a different inner sanctum—the one occupied by the writers of the half dozen or so posts in the Forum that haven’t gotten proper credit in Database write-ups of the same terms. The idea you propose has been suggested before—at least a couple of times. It remains a good idea….
