INERT tube (inner)

I really located only one instance where an inner tube was referred to as an inert tube. (One would expect it to be rare because “inert” is a far less common word than “inner.”) But perhaps “inner” only makes sense when the tube is intended to be placed inside something else. Otherwise, “inert” just might as well describe the gas inside. (Or perhaps some other sense of “inert”?)
