an "open cask coal mine"

” ... in an open cask coal mine in the north-eastern city … (BBC News <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6942733.stm> 12 August 2007)

Dictionary definition and proper usage: Open pit – A mine that is entirely on surface. Also referred to as open-cut or open-cast mine.
<http://www.goldworld.com/dictionary/#O>

Miners have a justified reputation for drunkenness and dissolute living, but any mine operator who leaves uncovered barrels, from which the miners may drink freely, won’t get much ore shifted out of the pit.

Google has trouble separating mining terms from descriptions of unlimited drinking and similar, but close reading of the hits reveals fewer than a couple of dozen examples. Google also asks immediately if “open cast” is intended.
