'eternal combustion engine'

The database has a version of the converse eggcorn, ‘eternally ->internally’, and at least one contributor here has noticed ‘infernal combustion engine,’ which is most often used deliberately and sarcastically. But I haven’t seen this phrase posted before. It suggests that the hydrogen -powered SUV is still a long ways off. Examples:

Oh ya, we have the technology to increase the fuel use efficiency of the eternal combustion engine, so why don’t we have access to it?

Re: 'eternal combustion engine'

I could understand this if used ironically in the sense of a perpetual motion machine – “the only acceptable gas-powered vehicle for a truly green family would have an eternal combustion engine”.
Otherwise it is simply wrong, IMHO.
