"rhinestorm/rhymestone/rindstone cowboy" for "rhinestone cowboy"

A ‘rhinestone’ is an imitation diamond originally made near Strasburg on the river Rhine. I didn’t know that; at least, not until I looked it up. ‘Rhinestone Cowboy’ is a song by Larry Weiss subsequently recorded by Neil Diamond then immortalised by Glen Campbell. We all knew that, or at least the last bit.
I suppose this is, if anything, a bit of a ‘pail’. You hear what you hear and assume that’s what everyone heard and there’s no need for anything to make any kind of sense. I can’t help but find alternative imagery, however unlikely; for example, a ‘rhinestorm cowboy’ has strangely Wagnerian overtones, a ‘rainstone cowboy’ has been out in very heavy hail and a ‘rhymestorm cowboy’ is a particularly prolific poet of the prairie. Unfortunately, the latter gets no hits.

My favorite song substitution was one I heard (about) on the radio—think it was in Toronto, about a decade ago. An announcer was reminiscing about a call-in music show he hosted. A young woman, he said, phoned to ask if he could play the Stones’ hit “I can’t get no savage action.”

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

For those interested in misinterpreted lyrics, these quasi-eggcorns go by the name Mondegreens. We’ve had a brief mention of these here in the forum in the past.

I love “rhinestorm cowboy.” I notice that all the hits come from German websites—maybe it is Wagnerian.
