diet soft drinks: feminine/famine

From a student paper on gendered drinks: “Coke Zero is for the male who is health conscious and image conscious. The guy who doesn’t want to be drinking the calories but still wants to have a manly image…They want to drink Diet Coke but won’t because…it has been portrayed far too much as a famine drink.”

Re: diet soft drinks: feminine/famine

It looks like a malapropism. The imagery surrounding the word “famine” was not intended. Rather, the intended imagery was still “feminine” whether it came out that way or not. It could be a case of inattentive listening when first learning the word. Or, the student might even have mislearned the word from a lazy speaker. But whatever the reason, we eggcorn hunters like to say, “nothing is obvious to the uninformed.”
