'hypochondriact' for 'hypochondriac'

There are many mis-spellings of ‘hypochondriac’ and I’m sure most of them are no more than that. Many of them, however, end in ‘act’, some in ‘react’ and some have a ‘con’ in the middle. I heard this last week from a lady in her late 70s who was a lttle unsympathetic to the condition.

You have to bear in mind that I have been back to the docs everytime the pain comes back and made to feel like a hypocondreact ,although they did send me …

Sorry Joe, sloppy checking again I’m afraid, but at least it disinters a possible eggcorn (has it sprouted?) and an independent rediscovery endorses its validity perhaps…

Re: 'hypochondriact' for 'hypochondriac'

Actually, Peter, I think the “react” contribution is new, and might be the better eggcorn. I covered the “act” version from the standpoint of a “hypochondriact” just “putting on an act.” But I think the “react” version might be a more sincere mistake because a “hypochondreact” is interpreted as someone who reacts badly (perhaps by nature) to something.
