'marquee' and 'marquis'

Today, I read a blogger who complained that Ian McKellen had won his part in a new film because he’s ‘a marquis name.’ I found that ‘a marquis name’ gets over 400 ghits, but I also discovered that the marquee->marquis substitution had been posted here in sept. 2006. So this new one is only a sub-eggcorn.

Since ‘marquee’ and ‘marquis’ are homonyms (in the U.S.) and both connote fame and high social standing, I wondered if the substitution might not also go the other way. Sure enough, there are over 100 ghits for ‘Marquee of Queensbury Rules’ (as though the late Marquis had displayed his famous rules in large letters for all to see). Examples:

‘marquee of Queensbury’

Born James Joseph Tunney on May 25th 1898, he was the first New York born prize fighter to win the heavyweight title under the Marquee of Queensbury rules.

...as far as i remember it was boxing rules (marquee of queensbury or whatever).

We’re dealing with a bunch of animals and we should not fight by the Marquee of Queensbury Rules.

‘a marquis name’

I mean, was Michael Dell a marquis name before he built Dell?... was Bill Gates a marquis name when he was 19 years old?

I just don’t think he’ll become a marquis name. ... Being a marquis name limits your options considerably.

But by using a skip-trace database, we were able to pull his home number and recruit him as a marquis-name chief marketing officer…

... Byrnison in favour of a marquis name in fantasy film, Ian McKellen…

But I think what they were looking for was really a marquis name … He is not a marquis name. He is not well known.
