This is a very common (278k ghit) error. I’m not sure it’s an eggcorn, although you might argue that your bandwith is that BAND of the spectrum WITH which your equipment works. At the very least, we can say that users of the new term (including the notorious right-wing blowhard and phony furturologist George Gilder) have lost touch with the engineering roots of the original. Speaking as a touch typist:
the D-to-T finger reach is sort of awkward; and the D is typed w/ the weaker finger. So it wouldn’t be unusual for someone to try to type “width” and not get the “d.” Also, “with” is the sort of letter group that really fast typists utilize; I sometimes find that I’ve typed the wrong homonym because the neurons fired in that order, even though I may have mentally thought through the spelling of the word I wanted.
It’s also an easy aural error—the “d” is sort of swallowed when you pronounce that word.
These are the sorts of things that help create eggcorns.
So if people are inventing a REASON it’s “with,” then it’s def. one.
