Pirates are hard men – and heartless too. So it’s maybe not surprising that what follows ‘Avast’ is often not ‘me hearties’ but ‘me hardies’. Or ‘me hardys’.

Google has so many hits (7000-odd) that I can’t choose one. It’s even got as far as this Swedish birdwatching site: http://www.artportalen.se/artportalen/g … geID=57963
