"blood ugly" for (?) "butt ugly"

A few weeks ago, I was listening to a lecture by the curator of a rare books collection, and I thought I heard him refer to a medieval book of hours as “a blood ugly little manuscript.” I can’t be sure I heard that right, but there are a few other instances of the phrase on the Web. (And there’s also a song called “Bloodugly” on the second album by heavy rock band Season to Risk.) Is this a euphemism for “butt ugly”? Examples:

It’s all there now, transplanted like some alien disease – lying like a raped and dying dream: blood ugly and dismembered in the middle of that war-torn road that is the ‘scene-of-our-crime today.

It grabs you by the gut and won’t let go until the nasty little appendage lies squirming, life draining from it in a specimen dish, extracted and blood ugly.

I hope this all works out, cause if it don’t, it’s gonna get ugly at his house, and I so totally mean blood ugly.
