living in squander

Recently overheard two men discussing a woman who apparently had come on hard times, living in a trailer, substance abuse, and so on. Said the one to the other: “She is living in absolute squander….”

Re: living in squander

Wow, I think you’ve got a good one, here. The funny thing to me is that one would think that if someone knew the meaning of “squander” they would also know the meaning of “squalor”. But, such is the essence of the human mind…and the eggcorn. I would also suppose that if one squandered one’s wealth, they very well may come to live in squalor.

Good find! And welcome to the forum!

Re: living in squander

Very nice eggcorn. I think “squalor” is a much less known word than “squander.” I particularly like the notion that a person who has squandered (her) resources is living in a state of “squander” ...I almost feel like spelling it “squandor”! :-)

Re: living in squander

I’m glad “my” eggcorn is getting good press….thanks for the comments.

I wonder how one would go about deciding whether the word “squander” is more or less well known than the word “squalor?” Or for that matter, any of the changed words that create an eggcorn. Would it be tied to some notion of frequency of use? Or is it basically an intuition we all have about the words we use, and which ones we think may be more common. For example, i recently used the word “ostensible” in an introductory college class of about 35 students, and none of them knew the word. Which surprised me.
