Can a person’s name be an eggcorn? In a book I’m working on, I discuss Stokely Carmichael and the Black Power movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. In looking up web records, I noticed that someone had spelled his first name “Stokey.” I did a search, and found more than a hundred non-dependent ghits with that spelling. I can understand the temptation to spell it that way-Stokely “stoked” the fires of social war between blacks and whites.

It’s an intriguing imagery, but I’m betting it’s just that “Stokely” is a silly name, and “Stokey” is silly too, but perhaps seems less silly.
