I also found some that were clearly puns or plays on words.
I think this is another situation where people have completely lost the imagery but know the term and its metaphoric rather than literal usage. Since we are no longer an agrarian society, how many people have even seen a weather vane or, if they have, associate it with the item itself or know that it is called a weather vane? It seems to me that many eggcorns have their basis in such “lost knowledge.”
But we often discuss replaced imagery, and I am having a hard time finding a clear image in whether vane. Though weather vein seems to provide an alternate image, which is used in some of the play-on-word examples I found:
