To be forlorn is to be abandoned and without hope. ‘Forlorn hope’ is the Dutch ‘verloren hoop’ tormented into its nearest English equivalent by English soldiers and refers to to a ‘lost troop’ who were prepared to undertake a near-suicidal attack for the prospect of advancement. The term was commonly used in the English Civil and Peninsular Wars. ‘Fallen hope’ is a less severe abandonment of hope. but retains the sense of the original.
