"ulterior mode" for "alternate mode"

I first heard this when someone was saying he needed an “ulterior mode of transportation”, which I think is actually a further mix up of “ulterior motive” and “alternate mode of”.

There’s an example of this very usage at the bottom of p. 211 in here:

They surely can’t mean that there should be a /hidden/ exit to the cul-de-sac….

I should note that this is similar, but in the opposite direction to http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/forum/view … hp?id=176, i.e. the confusion between ‘alter’ and ‘ulter’, and the ‘mode of’ and ‘motive’ thrown in for good measure.
