If you can catch Planter’s Warts, why not a Hunter’s Virus too? Hanta Virus is carried by rodents and causes a potentially fatal respiratory infection. It sometimes gets lumped with Ebola and Marburg as a potential biological weapon. (and it has to be distinguished from Hunter Virus, which causes gastroenteritis, and ‘Hunter Viruses,’ which are genetically modified organisms studied as potential cancer treatments.) Examples:
The cost of Ribavirin shot up to R4 445 a dose when it was falsely believed to be useful in the treatment of the HIV virus and the fatal Hunter’s virus.

Nice – the mentions of rodent vectors make it fairly clear that most of these intend hanta virus and not Hunter’s virus. And the two words are, for some speakers, homophones.
All that remains is the semantic imagery – perhaps an association with the outdoors? In my own case, I associate the hanta virus with the wood pile at my childhood house (which was home to many mice). Maybe there is an association between hunters and places where rodents live?
