wipe board for white board

Got this one in an email today – referring to what I would call a white board
(dry erase marker board as opposed to a chalk board, normally white in color),
as a “wipe board”, which struck me funny, even though it makes a
certain amount of sense.

Google gives 3.5 million hits for “white board”, 62 thousand for “wipe board” – some references to “Dry-Wipe Board” as a product.

Google groups has 96 hits for “wipe board”, 15,600 for “white board”. One
post spelled it all out: “dry wipe board/white board”.

Is wipe board an eggcorn? To me it’s sort of like calling a chalkboard an “erase board” (since you wipe one and erase the other), whereas white and chalk are features of
the things themselves.
