'century duty' for 'sentry duty'

You’d think anyone familiar with the word ‘century’ would be equally familiar with ‘sentry’, but apparently not. As for alternative imagery, being a sentry is exceedingly tedious and sentry duty may feel as if it lasts for a century, but this seems unlikely. Perhaps the notion of a Roman Centurion is exerting some influence. Perhaps it’s just a mis-spelling as in ‘sentries ago” (15ghits).


If she wasn`t there they would probably trash the place and worry about the mess later but the cleaner appears to be on permanent century duty and kicks up …

I almost wonder if some of these folks have the Roman Centurion in mind when they think about standing guard… Either that or the idea that standing still for any length of time feels like a century?
