One piece of low hanging fruit that we do not seem to have picked yet: the confusion about how to spell “succubus.”
I was thinking this morning about succubi (don’t ask), and it occurred to me that the word was ripe for substitution. I checked the web and, sure enough, numerous references to “suckubi” turned up. Since a succubus is a sexual vampire who preys on men while they sleep, “sucking” the life from them, substituting “suck” for the Latin prefix “sub” (sub/under+cubus/lie=succubus/lie under) was perhaps inevitable.
I’ve listed below a few web citations of this substitutions. Can’t really recommend typing “suckubus” into an internet search engine-the pages that turn up are less than wholesome. I took one for the team.
On a Ghanaian discussion board: ”[Barack] neede to do it..cos of that suckubus named hilary..she acts as if she is intelligent….” (http://discussions.ghanaweb.com/viewtop … 9ba762f7bf)
Fantasy baseball bulletin board: “Your an suckubus, yes the most evil type of woman there is. ” (http://forums.sportingnews.com/viewtopi … 84&start=5)
Myspace group: ”[X] told me that she was and still is a suckubus. So watch out…cuz she will destroy you. ” (http://tinyurl.com/5zvwm4)
Blog comment on Condi Rice: “no I think it is for her being a blood thirsty suckubus. I don’t think her gender came into consideration” (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/09/1 … r-a-visit/)
Blog comment: “My wife has two friends right now that have her ‘lo-jacked’. They call her up and the first thing is ‘where you at?’ Which is extremely annoying to say the least. One is a suckubus and the other is a user” (http://pt8.blogspot.com/2005_08_21_archive.html)
This is kinda scary. I was sitting here writing about—among other things—succubi, when I decided to check the Eggcorns website for a break. And there at the top is the latest entry: Kem’s “suckubi.” (Yes, definitely low-hanging fruit in my opinion.)
I can’t decide whether that’s a good omen or a very bad one.
