Forgot to point out that the phrase “trespassers will be persecuted” is now pretty much mainstream and often used inentionally, though the original was “trespassers will be prosecuted”.

Gillibug, I think you’ve hit on a genuine widespread eggcorn.
After hearing with amusement someone on the radio tonight describing the “Public Persecutor” I came straight to the Eggcorn forum and found your post. Here’s another example: “Public Persecutor Amina Isa attended yesterday hearings of cases at the Juveniles court to be the first female representing the public persecutor office at courts.( http://www.womengateway.com/NR/exeres/7 … 9C871F.htm ). Although a significant fraction of the instances of its use are by those with English as a second language, and others use it ironically, there are more than 105,000 hits for “public persecutor” on Google today. It’s a logical eggcorn.
