Restbite

Just spotted this on The Guardian blog: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree … columnists

A bite of rest instead of ‘respite’. Obviously a mis-hearing of similar-sounding consonants, but also makes sense in its own way as a composite word.

On Google I found a ‘restbite home for autistic children’
http://www.pressbox.co.uk/Detailed/10003.html

and ‘Ahhhh my god! Restbite please!’ http://davesmsblog.blogspot.com/2005/10 … lease.html

as well as a ‘Windmill Childrens Rest Bite Centre’
http://www.all-wolverhampton.co.uk/busi … m-1548365/

and 10,100 references on Google, although some of them are for ‘rest bite’ which is defined in a medical dictionary as ‘a misnomer for physiologic rest position of the mandible’.

Re: Restbite

Sorry to tell you this Mr_sloane: not only has this been suggested a number of times before, but you were one of the people to suggest it, back in December of 2006. See your earlier post here: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/forum/view … p?pid=2418

It’s a good one in any case, and I think it’s too bad that it’s never made it into the Database.
