W(h)itter on/away

Googling for “w(h)itter(ing|ed) away the” suggests that this is moderately common eggcorn for “whittle away”, with various examples of the form

“w(h)itter away the time|hours|afternoon|day” or “wittering away at the work”

“Witter away” itself is actually very common, but is simply a variation of “witter” or “witter on”.

Note the dictionaries I could find only listed “witter” as being spelled without the h. Most online dictionaries don’t list it at all.
