Saw this one in a letter I received from an ex-girlfriend in late 1973 or early ‘74. Never encountered it elsewhere. Perhaps it’s unique? Or has someone else encountered this one?
BTW, I just stumbled upon this site and I love it! Thanks to the moderator(s)! DixonOffline
Nice one! No, not unique:
This new version of OpenOffice is truly incredible. I was, sort of speak, bought when it loaded my PhD thesis (written way back in 2001) with all equations and graphics, perfectly. http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/05/08/ea … -how-long/
I mean do you have celiac if you have the gene or can it be “sleeping” sort of speak? Yes. http://www.glutenfreeforum.com/lofivers … 25401.html
About 6 months ago I was using the Movie DemoManager to create my movies, camera were working just fine… a jewel, sort of speak. Now I have some problems: I use custom rifles, and when I’m reproducing the Demo the weapon is not shown correctly on First Person view. It’s like the weapon does not follow the player moves. I turn and the weapon stays facing the same position it was. (Sort of speak it seems i only turn the player head). http://www.unrealadmin.org/forums/archi … 14014.html
That last one, with two usages only a few lines from each other, is especially nice as bolstering the case that this is standard for the writer.
And, Welcome!

I didn’t have that one, but two related ones:
Yep, this is a long shot Gamble, soda speak, but perhaps someone out there has just the knowledge I seek. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/t … -01/101371
The 50th anniversary of anything, in human terms anyway, is pretty remarkable! A lot of water under the bridge, soda speak. Music was a big part of our lives back then and collectively we were up on the hit parade. http://www.masonwilliams-online.com/news.html
I am waiting, since 0800 this morning, on the arrival, installation, and breaking in of my new…stove! My old one gave out, as luck (soda speak) would have it, on Holy Saturday. I’m gettin’ way tired of the microwave! http://www.writing.com/main/books.php/i … SC/page/13
And a Helenism:
shall we speak
(blending “shall we say” with “so to speak”)

we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

I love “soda speak”! But I can’t figure what the speaker/writer might be picturing! “Sort of” speak does make sense in that the person wants to say it but isn’t quite sure it’s right, so he says it “sort of.”
Feeling quite combobulated.

Yeah, I wouldn’t list “soda speak” as an eggcorn, because it does not make much sense.
Not all that tickles is eggcorns, sort of speak.

My guess is that those who write “soda speak” have never seen “so to speak” in writing, and have always wondered just where the expression came from. I agree that it isn’t an eggcorn, and that the users don’t necessarily make an association – they just use an expression that they have heard.
