'humback whale' for 'humpback whale'

Most likely a misspelling, although an unusual frequent one (28k ghits). Humpback whales put out a lot of sound but, to the best of my knowledge, they don’t hum. Examples:

Re: 'humback whale' for 'humpback whale'

Maybe if you hum to it, it will hum back?

You do hear of whales singing, of course, and whale song. But I suspect it also might be a case of the “p” sound getting lost against the (is the term aspirated?) “b” of “back” and that is being reflected in the spelling.

Just for fun, I googled “hunchback whale.” Guess what?

I’m not quite sure what term you’re looking for, but b is not aspirated in English; aspiration, the release of a small puff of air at the release of a consonant, is standard with word-initial p.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspiration_%28phonetics%29

The deletion of one or more sounds from a consonant cluster (or from any other environment, for that matter) is called, rather prosaically, deletion.

Re: 'humback whale' for 'humpback whale'

It makes sense that the initial “p” would be aspirated. (And I really do learn something nearly every time I log on here.) I believe “voiced” is the word I was looking for (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiced_consonant). When you say an initial “b” sound, the voice sounds behind it, whereas the same movement of lips, etc., without the voice behind it makes the “p” sound. In any case, I wonder if the unvoiced, aspirated “p” is lost because of its proximity to the voiced “b” to make humback so common.

Re: 'humback whale' for 'humpback whale'

unvoiced [?] “p”

Quite so.

I wonder if the unvoiced [?] “p” is lost to the voiced “b” to make humback so common.

Quite probably.
