For Whom the Bell Tows

Inspired by the Database entry on “corn rolls” (listed under row/roll), I decided to go looking for roll boats and toll trucks. Yup, they’re out there. Maybe these are eggcorns. Rowboats are so small that they’re playthings of the rolling waves—and therefore roll boats. Similarly, you do have to pay a type of toll any time you call a toll truck. But I’m still deciding whether I’m convinced by my own rationalizations—“toll truck” seems like the better candidate, but one writer clearly expected the toll truck to toll his/her vehicle away. These may just be examples of vocalized /l/ and no more. Opinions?

Examples:

I’m not kidding…...unless it is only the bottom shell of a roll boat.

I’m tempted to put you on a roll boat and send you back but we are too far out.

The gangbouard in a roll boat, like the type a lighthouse keeper may have used.

Great…spare is used on the other side and nothing I can do except call a toll truck to toll my car back to a friend house from Derry Rd and Airport Rd to McCowan and Steeles.

Plus last one we had so much car trouble that we were up 24hrs that day waiting for a toll truck

Or if your car breaks down, you can use the service for a toll truck.

Okay so 3 hours or so passed that night. those guys still out there, with a toll truck trying to get the car out of the sand.

And oh yeah—“For Whom the Bell Tows.” 21 ghits. According to the first hit, it’s a book written by Earnest Hemingway.

It’s a hard roll to hold …
