"at cross purposes" vs. "across purposes"

insomnia. too tired to try to research the origin and precise meaning of these phrases, and though I have the impression that “at cross” is the original, I dunno… and I dunno if the meaning, given the origin which I am unaware of, is different enough between them to make one an eggcorn. tired tired tired. eyes hurt.

so just putting it up here for discussion if someone wants to take a crack at it.

Hope you got yourself some rest. Insomnia is no joke. Even the contemplation of eggcorns can’t always overcome it.
