"day view"/"dayview" for "debut"

Apparently because a debut is when one sees the light of day.

“As we said in our previous post, Miley dayviewed her new single “7 things” at Elvis Duran’s show “The Morning Zoo”.”

“Wabasha made his dayview in EAW and in Jan 1991, HE WON THE EAW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.”
“Jan 1990-Dayviewed as Mr.Wabasha, a Providence Native Caviar Eater.”

“Now, 30 years after his dayview, Alice brings us the darkest, heaviest album of his glorious career, Brutal Planet.”

“I do have one picture thanks to Kathys camera so here is Charlottes big day view…”

—And mid-thread from: http://www.indieclub.com/tacoboard/thre … 848&page=4

“Check out how well Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles did on its’ dayview on Fox TV:”

prompting the question:

“BTW – Mike Cervello… what’s a “dayview”? Is that some measure of audience—“views per day”? Or do you mean “debut”?”

and the OP’s response:

“It comes from sports to basically mean under the spotlight for the first time. It’s opening night is another way of putting it.”

Re: "day view"/"dayview" for "debut"

A great find. It’s a double-barreled eggcorn that reshapes both elements of the original while still making sense of them.

And it’s wonderful that you found an originary narrative detailing the beginnings of the phrase in those last 3 citations. We have found plenty of eggcorns on sports pages over the years—it’s not impossible that the poster did originally encounter the reshaping in a sports article or program. Or they might simply be aware subconsciously of the same tendency we’ve noticed.

Hard to get a count on this for obvious reasons, but “its dayview” gets 39 raw hits, and “dayviewed” gets 48—so it seems likely that the total raw hits would reach well into the 100s at least.

This is fantastic. Fantabulous!

It’s a huge amount of fun. It makes perfect sense—in the light of day for the first time!

Don’t you mean “Fantavulous,” TootsNYC? :-) Those V and B consonents are so easy to mix up, and without any knowledge of French, this one would make perfect sense. (It does make you wonder how these people pronounce “debut,” however!) By the same logic, people misspell the name of the composer Debussy.

And this is one of many…

Feeling quite combobulated.

har, har, Jon!

When I was a kid, I lived in Iowa. We loved the Iowa State Fair, especially the Buried Industries Building.
