"snipped in the bud" for "nipped in the bud"

It seems like the image of snipping a plant bud rather than nipping it may be at work.
examples:
“Shuffling, especially the hardstyle variant, must be snipped in the bud.”
http://computerworld.co.nz/news.nsf/fry … 9F001081A7

“Just a few “treats” that have become habits that need to be snipped in the bud.”
http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthr … ?p=2389563

also “snipping”:
“The General could have acted faster and earlier by snipping it in the bud.”
http://commonconcernsofhumanity.blogspo … -down.html

and “snip”
“Like the old saying goes, “it’s best to snip it in the bud”.”
http://www.the-golf-nut.com/article-40.htm

There are even examples of “snipped in the butt”
“Or the entire idea could just be snipped in the butt…”
