A draw nerve

Only one example, but it’s quite striking.

“Clearly not true as the Mail tries to launch moral panics about twice a week, normally they die without trace. This one had legs as it struck a draw nerve with the public fed up with the likes of Brand and Ross who think they have the right to insult who they want.”

This seems to be, at least potentially, a pun with legs: a google search gives a couple of UK football headlines and not much else. For example http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-80529777.html

Re: A draw nerve

Is the imagery something like “a tightly stretched (drawn) nerve”? I’m not sure I get it.

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)

Re: A draw nerve

Actually I think it’s draw==tie we’ve got here. It’s certainly weird, but clearly it works for the football section subeditors. In soccer, a draw is an unsuccessful and unclear outcome that can trigger dissatisfaction on both sides.
