Most mentions are deliberate wordplay but a few seem genuine. As for possible imagery, syrup is fairly furtive, a quiet substance which moves slowly and surreptitiously, some might even say sneakily:

More than the furtive movement of syrup, I would have suspected the connection might be the sweetness of stolen waters, sweet & juicy tidbits of gossip, or something like that. Yes, wordplay would be likely in some cases, even of those you cite. But a few might make it.
