'agassed' for 'aghast'

Revisiting David’s agasp/aghast, this suggested itself. Any imagery is more mustard gas than Jumping Jack Flash and it is employed as if it were one with ‘amazed’ say, or ‘accursed’. In the last example the word stretches its wings a little:

Judy was agassed that it was someone we both knew from the days at the Metaphysical book store Karleen…the woman described her to a tee…there could be …

America was agassed and CBS was fined $500000 for letting it happen. So many people used their TiVo recorders to view and review the event that the whole …

Needless to say, as a retired Marine from a Marine family, who knows the true meaning of HONOR, I was agassed! I knew then it was all on my son and I. ...

I recognized the boat in JSea’s pics and called a friend that knew the owner and told him that was uncool, the friend was agassed as well, but said he was …

I was agassed that the Counsel General in San Francisco would not speak to Pres. Estrada about the 85000 (not sure if it is 85 million or 85 thousand? ...

What is agassing about the attitude you may face when dealing with others is what I call the attaitude of Plz help me ! Ok, helping others is a great virtue …

Re: 'agassed' for 'aghast'

Love it. The imagery is shifted a bit with “agassed,” isn’t it? “Aghast” means shocked, getting an unpleasant surprise. Something that is a “gas,” in Irish/American slang, is funny, admirable, so “agassed” presumably means that the speaker is pleasantly surprised.

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

What’s even eerier, Peter, is that this one has been on my to-do list. (Though admittedly it’s been on it for months, so I can’t complain too loudly.)

Isn’t “eerier” a really weird-looking word?

A bit similar to this one:

GASLY (ghastly) ...and an aside on car crashes by jorkel Contribute! 1 2006-09-13 07:39:48 by jorkel

but noteworthy nonetheless.

Joe—this also reminds me of your “flabbergassed” post from a couple of years ago. I always wondered with that one whether the eggcorners imagined the emotional condition of flabbergastment as like having certain gases (such as “laughing gas”) administered to you.
