'vex' for 'vent'

Hard to mistake one for the other I’d have thought, and I can make no real sense of it as vexation seems much milder than anger and functions awkwardly as a verb in this context. ‘Vex’ in the following examples often seems more a hybrid of vent and flex:

I wonder if wax as in wax wroth may be affecting things somehow?

In any case, the transitive/intransitive pair vent anger (on X) / be vexed (at/by X) is close enough to provoke a blend. I must have dozens of blends produced by such partially-synonymous pairs.
