Re: "heart drenching?"

This one is mind drenching. The obvious variants are there as well.

I can’t describe the gut drenching feeling in my stomach as I saw them drive away … (http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/hai … 12752.html)

Of Montreal played a mind-drenching set at Roseland Ballroom last Friday night … (http://theskyreport.blogspot.com/2008/1 … lroom.html)

Here’s another heart-wrenching variation – “hard-wrenching”

It is very easy to see the hard-wrenching trap that people are often in simply because of finances. (http://bestlifedesign.com/index.php/blo … words.html)

Re: "heart drenching?"

It turns out that Kem mentioned this one in a thread a few months back, but he didn’t provide examples because he didn’t feel it was an eggcorn. The citations here have made me think about it harder, and I think jmaiuri’s examples in particular may have as their semantic justification the idea that the heart is drenched with emotion. Works for me; let’s see if Kem weighs in.

This also sent me looking for “heart-rinsing.” I could only find 2 examples, and one of them was in a text in .pdf format. But here’s the accessible one, in a brief review of Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks album:

Pure heart rinsing lyrics, with simple layers of music that will last till there is nothing.
http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/ … reviews/31

The idea here seems to be one of emotional catharsis—the lyrics rinse your heart of the type of pain they subject you to. And Blood on the Tracks is certainly heart-wrenching in my book. “Idiot Wind,” “Tangled Up in Blue”—what awesome songs! But you could say that about every track on this classic. It was supposedly recorded during Dylan’s separation from his first wife, Sara, and it’s one of the great break-up albums. While living overseas, I introduced the person I was dating to it—she fell in love with it, promptly broke up with me, and then took the copy of the disc that we’d bought together. Yup, a great, great record.

Re: "heart drenching?"

I mentioned “gut-drenching” in that earlier post. “Gut-drenching” still seems to me a bit odd. It calls to mind a high colonic. But, like Pat, I think “heart-drenching” has something going for it. Tears of sadness inundating the seat of feelings.

She loved your break-up singer, broke up with you and nipped your break-up songs. Ah, the irony! You should pitch the plot to Woody Allen.

Ouch. Well, that was certainly nasty and mean-spirited, Kem.

Re: "heart drenching?"

Sorry, I didn’t intend the comment ironically (though I see now how one could read it that way). I meant that your experience really is a classic metaphor of irony, the kind that so many of the early Woody Allen plots turned on.

One of Woody Allen’s funniest examples of this Irony of Life is in (I think) Bananas. Allen is facing a firing squad. The firing squad is distracted. He lifts the blindfold, notices what is happening and scampers over the wall behind him-only to land in the target zone of another firing squad. Such is life.

Re: "heart drenching?"

Another evocative if not traumatic variant on heart-wrenching that I’ve come across is “heart trenching”

A Heart Trenching Post From My Teacher (http://lento.itvoice.hk/?p=57)

Shes a very positive girl and to have this happen upon her is truly heart trenching.(http://www.nowmagazine.co.uk/celebrity- … missing/1/)

The interaction of these two old friends was simultaneously heartwarming and heart trenching … http://www.comicsbulletin.com/reviews/1 … 838159.htm)

As was the case for drenching, there is a possibility for other organs to be trenched:

And with Jocelyns ‘powerful’ gut trenching voice ‘The Diva’ style was born and the music business in my eyes was never the same again. (http://freespace.virgin.net/kiz.james/BANDS13.htm)

A final variant that is unfortunately rare is a blend between wrench and raunch. This may be a simple malapropism, but then again, it conjures up an image of rude treatment of the heart:

i gotta say, this is one of them most dramatic and heart raunching film i have ever seen. (http://filesharingtalk.com/vb3/archive/ … 91104.html)
