Frequently used instead of acidic or acidulous, aciduous becomes eggcornish when employed in place of ‘assiduous’, aided greatly by the rigor suggested by “acid test” and with a certain astringent quality that I associate, probably unfairly, with the original.

The last example you gave works best, Peter. The tenacity of “assiduously” transforms into a rancorous “acidously.” At first this walked the line between eggcorn and malapropism for me, but it seems to be more sculpted from “assiduous” than anything else, so I’m leaning toward eggcorn again.
