"livered" for livid

In traditional Chinese medicine, there is a direct two-way relation between emotions and specific organs. Henry Fong’s blog (http://www.henryfong.com/blog/anger-hurts-the-liver/) points out one interesting connection:

It is common (at least amongst the Cantonese) to say, “Wu Shang Gan” when trying to calm an angry person down. It is like saying, “Take it easy” or “Calm down”.
But do you know that “Wu Shang Gan” mean “Do not hurt the liver”?
Why? Because an unbalance liver can cause irritability in a person and the continued anger makes it worse.
Therefore the next time you lose your head, remember it not only hurts your relationship with others, it also hurts the liver!

I propose that this connection is sufficient to explain the substition of “livered” for “livid” (drained of colour) with anger:

Car blog: When I told him the storey he was livered. (http://blogs.drive.com.au/2006/08/are_a … rated.html)

Seniors blog: A few minutes later, God saw His children having an apple break and He was livered!
“Didn’t I tell you not to eat the fruit?” God asked. (http://www.silverpeers.com/public_html/ … f=2&t=1297)

Football blog: In all honesty most of the time your hard strapped to get Hasler’s opinion. The fact that he said that much means he was livered with the performance of Hampsted. (http://forums.leagueunlimited.com/showt … 923&page=3)

Travel discussion board: My TW, daughter and I returned from the GC on Air Asia X yesterday, TW will never fly them again, she was livered I was probably a bit more tolerant considering … (http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Flown-Air … 94119.html) Does TW mean “the wife”?

Single mom blog: I sat on the bed with buttercup and my ex started pulling his mother out the room, she was livered at the fact that he was taking my side (www.5fm.co.za/blogjockeys/blog.aspx?id=16152)

Sports board: lol, bet she was livered when riise scored that own goal wot a doof lol (http://www.stilosport.com/forum/index.p … pic=2423.0)

The archives contain another connection to livid: the livid daylights—http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/forum/view … hp?id=2173

Re: "livered" for livid

I can guarantee we will win another WC before your lily livid lot…….. lookout , I hear the footsteps of the Scottish side that beat yours ….pahahahaa LOSERS …

U ARE NOTHING MORE THAN A LILY LIVID TOYOTA LOVER. YOUR SWEEPING STATEMENTS DON’T REFLECT MUCH RESEARCH. YOU AND YOUR CAMRY DESERVE ONE ANOTHER!

Not sure if you meant it this way, but it comes off as “lily livid liberals selling our people out to the jews/blacks etc.”, so I must question,

(Which do you suppose causes the most illiterate macho attempts at artful put-downs: discussions of football teams, cars, or politics?)

I don’t know. Looks like a simple slip to me. But a beaut of a slip (or, as another malaprop has it, a real butte).

Re: "livered" for livid

Agreed. This one would best be moved to the Slips and malaprops thread, I overdid it by submitting as a Contribution. “Lily livid” is amazing. Might work as an eggcorn if they implied that the one being insulted was angry in addition to being soft., but you’re right, David, none of the instances of lily livid out there rise above machismo.

Re: "livered" for livid

So if one calms down, or ceases to have his face discolored, we can thank God for the deliverance?

Re: "livered" for livid

I had no recall of this thread when I recently started wondering about the possibility of “absolutely livered” as an eggcorn for “livid.” I was a bit startled when the Seach button brought up such a lively thread that had utterly escaped memory. David’s Chinese medicine angle hadn’t occurred to me, but I was thinking instead of the purply-red color of beef livers—not so different from the livid countenance of a truly angry person. So I’m belatedly making an argument that this may well be a legitimate eggcorn rather than a mere slip. Good find, David!

Re: "livered" for livid

Of course! You’ve put your finger right on it. I clearly didn’t get this one, based maybe in part on the tertiary and misleading definition of livid as “pallid” that I dredged up from somewhere.
