"Baton down the hatches" << "Batten down the hatches"

I saw this in a newsletter from sone financial advisors:

“What is sure is that investors and economists will keep monitoring the overnight bank lending rate. If this continues downwards, we may move towards a more positive scenario. Otherwise, we may need to baton down the hatches and prepare for a bumpy ride.”

Google gives > 4000 hits. I suppose it’s not surprising that people don’t guess the nautical word “batten” (=strip of wood), but the idea of fixing hatches with a conductor’s baton gives a strange mental picture.
