"Mattrest" for mattress

The word mattress has a long pedigree, going back to 14th century England, then to France, then the Italian materasso, and finally to Arabic, where it meant something like “thing thrown down”. So the second syllable of mattress is not a feminine suffix, but it does lend itself nicely to the idea of a mat to rest upon. However, not so fast, since the matt in mattress is not the same word as a mat to lie on or to cover the floor with. That one comes from Latin matta , for ‘mat made of rushes’, from the 4th century. It looks tantalizingly like it enjoyed an eggcornish blend somewhere along the line. 454 ughits.

My grandson & I camped here 1 night, Kevin found bear tracks around the lake, & he did’nt sleep well this night & air mattrest got a hole in it (http://www.arcanation.com/switch.cfm?ao … diaid=7783)

I use Wells Fargo Banking since Norwest merged with and I am very happy with them. Those who wanted to close the account at WF and move the money to the other banks or put them under a mattrest per si would as I term them as the fool and the money may soon be departed… (http://community.comcast.net/comcastpor … 303&page=4)

Living Quarters Bossa Bed has a spring loaded mechanism to lift the mattrest for storage underneath. (http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/good … age-000916)

These folks had the same etymological idea without following through:

Mattress manufacturer’s website in Pakistan Mattress is derived from two words “Mat to Rest”.

Eggcornista! The honour is a testament to how much fun this site is. Gosh, now I only need 50 more posts to get into the tree house, then I’m going for the decoder ring so I can read the secret messages that the eggcornistas must be passing back and forth, about where to find the best eggcorns. I’ll be happy to fill you in on my background, but first there must be celebration!
