The origins of foresake are as fore coming through OHG from Skr., implying rejection, and sake from Gmc, strife, quarrel, or legal claim1. To be foresaken is to be abandoned in your hour of need. The biblical King David cried out, ‘My God, my God, why hast thou foresaken me?’ [Matthew 27:46].
An alternative rendition of this word is as foreshaken. It appears in situations where God is invoked in one way or another, either literally for tectonic movement, or virtually, when God has previously stirred things up, or has abandoned a cause, as by “shaking it off”. People can also foreshake worldly things, to be free of them.
Christians vs. Pagans:
Adoration of the different saints, not unlike Greek gods. Poor Saint Christopher who sat on our dashes for many years has been foreshaken.

Bhagvad-Gita:
The person who does not take shelter in the worldly things, and is ever contented, abandoning the desires caused by action while engaged in work is not a doer. Who has control over senses and mind. Has foreshaken the wordly things, such a man free from desires only does his work physically and he does not commit any sin.

I like this one a lot. But I don’t think “for-,” etc. is from Sanskrit—the Germanic and Sanskrit prefixes are just cognates.

Lovely.
I’m a bit confused about the spelling. Why are you using the spellings “foresaken” and “foreshaken” for “forsaken” and “forshaken?”

Ahem, just checking to see if everyone was on their toes. Good for you, Kem, for pointing out that forsaken and foresaken are two different words, and the latter is misspelled.

If I wasn’t on this forum, Mr (Mr.) Bird, you could have claimed that “foresaken” was the Canadian spelling. It’s a ruse I have found convenient.
Canadian spelling, for readers of this forum who don’t know, is totally fubar. Sometimes we use the English spellings. Sometimes we side with the Americans. The only thing certain is that we can never predict which system of spelling applies to which word.
Canada, which accepts refugees of all types from all nations, welcomes a special category of refugee from the UK and the US. The Canadian Government recognizes (recognises) orthographic refugees. They are either Brits, who because they have read a (an) horrendous number of American comic books. or Yanks, who because they grew up reading the Lord of the Rings, the Narnia stories, and Wind in the Willows, have demagnetized (demagnetised) their spelling compasses. They leave countries where they are stigmatized (stigmatised) for their spelling inconsistencies and catch transportation (transport) to Canada, where (1) we don’t have enough candor (candour) to tell them they have spelled (spelt) a word wrong and (2) we are never quite sure whether they really are wrong. Many of these refugees, revel(l)ing in their new freedom, stay and make friends with their equally-confused neighbors (neighbours). Those who feel they need more rigor (rigour) in their orthography either return home or take French immersion and move to Quebec, the only Canadian province where there is just one way to spell a word.
