"vagabound" for "vagabond"

Vagabonds are usually bound for somewhere else. “Vagabond” comes from Latin “vagari” (“to wander”) + the gerundive suffix “-bundus,” so there’s no etymological connection to “bound.” At least 300 ughits for this. Examples:

The story is about a vagabound moving from one countercultural community to the next in the southwest, then ending up to stay quite a while with one qualitatively different than the rest.

Marika is a friend of the hero from childhood and daughter of the village chief as well as a member of the town guard, while Ryu is a vagabound who arrived in the village some time ago.

Caldicot castle is reputed to be haunted by a number of ghosts and spirits including a grey lady, hooded monks and a vagabound boy.

As I set up the tripod, I noticed a vagabound, looking in my belongings for food.

In those days, with skimpy purses and a vagabound lifestyle, the pros expected such behavior, and Mr. Snead was famous for giving as good as he got.

Nice!
.
Vaga winds up sounding a destination or direction in a construction parallel to “homeward bound”. Or perhaps one is restricted to a life of wandering?

I was wondering whether “vague” or (even) “vaguer” might be exerting subliminal influence—a vagabond is someone whose ultimate destination is usually vague. But that seemed like a bit of reach.

I’d call it a reasonably attainable reach. There are also “vagaries” out there.

And vagrants too. Aren’t vagabonds vagrancy-bound?

In support of Peter’s surmise, you’ll find a few examples on the web of “vagrabond.”

Re: "vagabound" for "vagabond"

After today’s discussion about moribund and company (link) I made the connection of the _-bundus_ root to vagabond, only to find that Pat et alia were all over that, a scant 6 months ago. The following examples will therefore only provide concrete evidence of Pat’s suggestion of “vague” subliminal influences, while binding together the bundus posts.

Im trying to roleplay abit, and looking like a vaguebond wasnt part of the plan.

The band’s pictures inspired me to make a drawing in the old, smokey vaguebond style.
