“Amess” used in place of “amiss” – spotted in the wild in comments to a New York Times article by readers. Comment writer was discussing the disappearance of manufacturing jobs in the US economy. Presumably he thinks things are “a mess”.

Very nice one! A candidate for the “under your nose†category.

Can you get the quote so we could see the context? There are of course many cases where “a mess†might well have been intended and not eggcorned in. I’d love to see it in a context like “He wondered what was amess.â€
The best I found were:
Tell us what we did right and what was a mess and give us any suggestions you have!
I didnt even suspect anything was amess and went st8 into preparation of dinner for my feathered kids

The substitution of mess for mis can also be found a few dozen times on the web in messtake.
Swine flu/aliens/secret government chip implants forum:

Religion blog replies:
You may say you believe in forgiveness also…. but you do not if you hold this against someone who messed up. You are not forgiving. If you make a messtake in your checking book. Should your wife submit to you and for give you. You messed up. Why should that person lead. Rediculious. And yes I know I can not spell. You blessed one.

Awesome! (I love the self-referential ones. Rediculious is pretty good along that same line.)

Sorry, can’t find it now, but the quote was the title of the post: “Something is terribly amess here.”
