"Stuck still" for stock still

The literal meaning of standing stock still is staying as immobile as a tree trunk (stocc from O.E.). The same root word also appears as the stock of a rifle and being of good family stock. “Stuck still” blends in the image of being stuck in place.

he ran out of stones to step on and suddenly stood stuck still on the last stone …He stayed there for an hour until finally his father came and picked him up, freeing him from his immobility. (http://web.yingjiesheng.com/kaoyan/list … 29366.html)

Re: "Stuck still" for stock still

A withdrawn comment identified stook still. This might be either a local pronunciation, or as reference to a stook of grain. A stook is a collection of sheaves of grain stood up in a field to dry.

The immobility of the stork is invoked in stork still.

Harry Potter fan fiction:
He smirked at me, letting the corner of his lips curl mischievously at the corner. Like a deer caught in headlights I stood stork still as he lowered that smirk to my lips and brushed his mouth softly against mine.

Fan fiction:
Just as the specter stood up to move towards him, another flashed of blurred figure moved on his right. The figure stood stork still and then suddenly ran forward towards the prostrate figure. A scream tore from his mouth.

Frozen shock still

And as they crumbled,he stood shock still in the ruins,

Related to stuck still, there is a stuck reminder.

Political forum:
where are Ugandans now??? For the last 22 years, the current gov’t sold out all national assets to foreigners, they have built no single hospital or school for the last 22 years. Health care and education and public sectors are in tatters; corruptions is now an official policy!!! All these are a stuck reminder that it is better to be governed by a nationalist than a foreign stooge like MDC-T!!

‘stop still’ is also seen:

Stop still is so clear, it might just take over. Here are some more strains. Very fecund source of new images. Hope you are not overwhelmed.

Everyone seems to have somehow shimmied around “stark still’ unless it’s really here and my failing eye has missed it. If so, apologies…

I hope whoever mines these things for inclusions in the *!Database!* (should be flashing lights around the name, with the importance some —not those here— seem to give it) reads all the subsequent posts. To include just stuck still there as representative of this discussion would be some kind of a trajesty (/travedy).

Re: "Stuck still" for stock still

For the sake of completeness, here are citations for “stood stand still.” I’m convinced I’ve heard this formulation my whole life – in fact, I think I may have used it in speech, at least – but it’s not common (roughly 50 ughits), and it seems to be something of a regionalism, with many of the hits from India. Examples:

He just stood stand still with his hands folded and stared . . .

Strangely on Workaholic’s Day, (yeah, they do have a day dedicated to drudgery too), India stood stand still due to NDA and Left parties’ Bharat Bandh protesting the price hike.

All his hopes of pursuing his college education were literally shattered. Imagine the plight of his education which stood stand still!

Traffic stood stand still by Morvant junction for about 45 minutes until some brave young fire officers came and started to direct traffic.

Re: "Stuck still" for stock still

There’s something about “stood stand still” that is nicely calamitous. It’s like a Voight-Kampff question the mind rebels against. To start, there is the duality of stand (verb/noun) and the trinity, at least, of still (adverb/adjective/noun, each polysemic). It is reminiscent of “The man the cat the dog bit scratched collapsed.”* Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the fully parallel “stood stand stilled”.
Then, the time-warp confusion of stood and stand.
Then “standstill”.

Partial eclipse in Ghana”:
Drivers drove with their lights on with some hooting the horns of their vehicles while people stood standstill watching what was going on.

A joy to the mind, like too much wasabi to the nose.

* I don’t remember where I came across this sentence, but here is an instance on the web.

Re: "Stuck still" for stock still

Just so long as you come to a full and complete stoic stock stuck stooken standstill before moving, it might be safe.

Big fuzzy spot, methinks: stuck, stark, starch, start, stoic
