A bight is a bend in a shoreline or a narrow bay. The Great Australian Bight is the huge indentation along the southern coast of Australia, and it does take quite a bite out of the continent. The phrase, ‘Great Australian Bite’ is a nearly irresistible pun for dentists and restaurateurs, but there are plenty of authentic eggcorn instances too:
