"Stand innovation" for standing ovation

A revolutionary way to applaud: by stand innovation! Maybe someone can help with “standing novation”—isn’t there some connection of “novation” to prayer? I can’t put my finger on it.

CD review:
What an achievement from Leona. She definitely deserves a stand innovation.

Fan site:
But last night i had a concert with the choir, it was so good we even got a stand innovation from the crowd!

Fan fiction:
Before I could register what was happening, the crowd was cheering and applauding, giving us a stand innovation.

Concert review:
Tom sang “IT’S NOT UNUSUAL” and recieved another standing novation.

Re: "Stand innovation" for standing ovation

Six posts in a row, burred. What is this, another strike?

Love this mistake. Malaprops that result from redivision of two words are especially attractive. I think it might even be an eggcorn. An “innovation” could be something spontaneous. A “stand innovation” could be a spontaneous standing to show appreciation.

“Novation” a prayer? Perhaps you are thinking of “novena” (if so, how interesting that you should have raised the issue on Ascension Sunday). Or perhaps you were thinking of a novice in a religious order going through his/her novitiate?

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

No, unfortunately, the strike is over. I can only poke around for reimagined words and phrases during brief interludes, and then release them into an unsorted heap on the forum doorstep from time to time when I should be occupied elsewhere.

I agree with you. Mistakes and malaprops can be very interesting, especially when they speak to me, too. I love that nagging feeling when they almost make sense; one approaches the holy fount of the eggcorn. You did put your finger on “novena” and “novitiate” as the words I was looking for. Now I’ve looked up ‘novena’ – not quite pertinent, but fun to learn about.

Re: "Stand innovation" for standing ovation

“Novato” is the Spanish for a newbie/greenhorn/novice, and is sometimes used in religious contexts. Is there a similar French word? Some similar form of “novus” has probably been around since Latin.
.
Might “oratio(nis)” ‘oration; eloquence; prayer’ also have been among the things chasing around in your mind?

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)
