‘Gainful’ and ‘gainfully’ are odd words that, as far as I know, occur only as part of this idiom. 500+ gits:

If somebody is gamefully employed writing video-game software I would suspect a purposeful pun. Otherwise I do not see the meaning connection: is the idea that a gamefully-employed person at least has a chance of winning a good living?

“Gain” and “game” share significant semantic space. We game in order to gain. We gain against others playing the same game. Our gains are our winnings from a game. And so on. I see enough lexical bridges to warrant an eggcorn call.
