Climate, clime, cline, incline, and lean all come from the same Gk. origins. Those precocious Gks were already wise to the shape of the Earth. They imagined the planet’s surface divided into 7 zones that varied in their angle of presentation to the sun. These were climate zones; only later did the word come to be associated with average weather conditions. A clime is a still region of the Earth, generally placed somewhere along the temperature gradient from colder to warmer. Although we do speak of climbing in latitude, and going up north and down south, the word climb is of separate origin from clime, and refers to scaling something by clinging to it. Nevertheless, these days, when climate has become a subject mentioned with an undercurrent of dread, due to the prospect of relentlessly climbing mercury, climbate is a natural connection to make.
