"quarter roy" for corduroy

Sometime along the road I learned that corduroy was a word of French extraction, something to do with the cloth of the king. Now, the dictionaries are coming up with a prima facie cockamamie story that the word is solid English, from cord and duroy, the latter some sort of rough woolen fabric that would scratch the softer royal arse. Duroy, however, is of unknown origin. I’m parading my ignorance of the etymological science, but it seems to me that you don’t have to be Jean-Luc Godard to recognize a French word staring you in the gueule.

Be that as it may, I almost always bow to the etymologist’s dependable pronouncements. Yet not everyone does. Take those who wear quarter roy. From the French quarter? Or like cloth lined with quarter round?

I think it looks like the weave of carpet, even kind of like quarter roy pants weave.

Oh… I love quarter roy pants.. they always made it harder for my sister to sneak up on me when she was up to something napharious.

This post is an oblique paean to David Tuggy’s recent suggestion :

What is it with the European mindset that so easily thinks of ruffles or layers in cloth as an, if not the, alpha-image for multiplicity?

Re: "quarter roy" for corduroy

Somehow the image of Roy Rogers riding a quarter horse comes to mind.

Re: "quarter roy" for corduroy

I guess this one is placed under “reshapings” because we really can’t extract any legitimate imagery for “quarter” or “Roy” ... I mean, besides what Mr. Tuggy has conjured up.

Is cord du Roi in there somewhere?
