James Joule was a wealthy brewer’s son in northern England who had little formal education, with the spectacular exception of a tutelage by the physicist John Dalton. His experiments in the brewery laboratories, which led to a new result regarding the heat generated by an electrical current flowing through a resistive conductor, were snubbed by the scientific establishment, forcing him to publish in a Manchester newspaper. Other pioneering work on the transformation of work into heat led eventually to the naming of a unit of energy, the joule, in his honour.
Do you pronounce it Joule’s to rhyme with schools,
