Seized to exist

I recently came across a use of ‘seized to exist’ for ‘ceased to exist’ in an essay in Mute, found here:

http://www.metamute.org/en/node/10612

A quick google search turns up ‘about 785’ more matches. The first 50 or so all use
the term to describe something that is no longer around, preserving the original meaning.

Re: Seized to exist

Welcome to the Eggcorn website. A variation of the eggcorn you mention has been catalogued in the Eggcorn Database. You can find it by clicking on “Eggcorn Database” in the red menu above, then clicking on “Browse eggcorns.” You can then scroll down to “cease >> seize” for more details.

Re: Seized to exist

Ah, I only searched for the whole phrase, not the single word. Thanks for pointing me to the other entry.

Re: Seized to exist

Roundtripping:

I got this jet ski given to me last month and found out that the motor is ceased up. It does NOT have a trailor. If you are interested give me a call

I went to drop it in the water today and it seems like the engine is ceased up or something and doesn’t turn over.

Thousands of hits, enough that the chances are good it is standard for some users. It’s a pretty good eggcorn in this phrase, in my opinion. Much less so are the ones recorded in the database .

Re: Seized to exist

Ceased up makes good sense. Misspelling based on eased and pleased might have primed it. Once your engine ceases, it’s as good as deceased.

My aunt has a Heart Decease and wants to relax (perm) her hair, was wonder if she does go ahead and put the chemical in her head what side effects would she possibly endure?

Re: Seized to exist

Link fixed.
btw the first citation in post #4 above was sent me by the same person who reported the list of bloopers posted in the slips section . (Did I get that link right?) This one was not produced by the same relative however, rather it was found on craigslist.
