raw « » roar

In some non-rhotic accents, there is little or no difference in pronunciation between raw and roar, nor between paw and pore, nor saw and sore. I see that this accent has a name: the paw-poor merger. Hence the endlessly entertaining eggcorn potential. In the first case, loud noises can be raw.

The round trip can also be made, with some danger to the throat, by those who sing with “roar energy”.

This legendary master of psychedelic blues has the same roar energy as the late great Howlin’ Wolf.
